The primary purpose of air traffic control is to prevent collisions between aircraft, between aircraft and vehicles, and between aircraft and obstacles. Air traffic controllers are responsible for ensuring the orderly flow of air traffic and for expediting and maintaining that flow.
During round-the-clock air operations, air traffic controllers help ensure that flight operations are conducted safely, Turkish airspace is monitored, and air traffic flow is managed efficiently.
Our University’s four-year undergraduate programme in Air Traffic Control aims to educate prospective air traffic controllers with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to obtain an air traffic controller licence in accordance with national and international standards.
The Nişantaşı University Department of Air Traffic Control was authorized by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) on 31 March 2021 with the “Air Traffic Control Training Organization Certificate,” document number TR-HTK-EO-03/001. An Air Traffic Control Training Organization is an SHGM-approved educational institution authorized to provide the theoretical and practical training required for the issuance of a Student Air Traffic Controller Certificate.
Our Department is equipped with radar and aerodrome control simulators. It has the first domesticaly developed 360-degree Aerodrome Control Simulator among educational institutions in Türkiye.
Applicants must be citizens of the Republic of Türkiye in accordance with the SHGM ATCO Instructions.
-To register for our University’s Department of Air Traffic Control, applicants must obtain a medical report from an Authorized Medical Centre approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or from a fully equipped hospital, stating: “Eligible to Become an Air Traffic Controller in Accordance with ICAO Annex 1, Class 3.”
-Applicants must successfully pass the aptitude examination administered by our University.
-Matters relating to the Department are governed by the Air Traffic Control Services Personnel Licensing and Rating Regulation (SHY 65-01).
Graduation
To graduate from our University’s Air Traffic Control programme, students must successfully complete al theoretical and practical courses in the undergraduate curriculum. Students who pass al courses must also successfully complete their internship at the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ).

Graduates of our University’s Department of Air Traffic Control may take the Air Traffic Controller Licensing Examination administered by SHGM. Those who pass the examination may obtain an air traffic controller licence and be appointed to assistant air traffic controller positions in DHMİ air traffic control units.
The eight-semester curriculum includes basic aviation, professional, and English-language courses. Professional courses are divided into theoretical and simulation-based components and are designed to cover Doc. 4444 and the relevant ICAO Annexes. Students who successfully complete the theoretical courses subsequently proceed to the simulation courses. Simulation training is conducted in the 360-degree Aerodrome Control Simulator and the Radar/Non-Radar Simulator laboratories.
